What Is Level 5 Drywall?
Level 5 is the highest common drywall finish: a thin skim coat over the entire wall after it has already been taped to Level 4. It is a surface, not a different kind of board.
The Short Definition
Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. When we say Level 5, we mean a full-field skim on a wall that is already taped, coated, and sanded — then checked in raking light. For the service, use the Level 4 and Level 5 page. This page is what the name means.
Level 4 vs. Level 5
Level 4 is a properly taped wall with joints and fasteners coated and sanded. It is the usual finish under flat or eggshell paint in normal room light.
Level 5 adds a thin skim over the whole surface so paper and mud take primer the same way. That is what you want under critical light, dark color, or a higher sheen. How lighting shows joints →
When Level 5 Is Worth It
Use it
Long windows, grazed cans, dark paint, near-gloss, or a spec that names Level 5.
Skip it
Textured rooms, closets, and walls nobody will see in side light. Level 4 or texture is enough.
Do not buy it yet
If the studs wave. A skim coat does not straighten a belly in the framing.
What Level 5 Is Not
- Not a brand of drywall board
- Not extra sanding on a Level 4 wall with no skim
- Not soundproofing or fire-rating
- Not a weekend DIY if the room has hard light
Cost, in Plain Terms

Is Level 5 the board or the finish?
The finish. You can skim regular, 5/8-inch, or Type X board. The stamp on the panel is a different question.
