Top 10 Primers for Level 5 Drywall

Primer is what keeps a Level 5 skim coat from flashing after paint. Below are 10 primers contractors and homeowners commonly use on smooth walls — plus when you should hire the finish work instead of buying another gallon.

Primer Cannot Save a Bad Skim Coat

Level 5 means the whole wall is skimmed so paper and mud are even. Then primer seals that surface so dark paint and hard light do not show joints. If the skim is uneven, no primer on this list will hide it.

Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We finish Level 4 and Level 5 walls in the Bay Area and Northern California. Use this list if you are choosing a product. Call us if you want the wall finished correctly first.

What a Level 5 Primer Needs to Do

  • Seal skim coat and raw paper so they absorb paint the same way
  • Reduce flashing at joints under raking light
  • Give the topcoat something to grab
  • On high-build products, help fill tiny sanding scratches

Formulas change. Always check the current product data sheet before you buy or spray.

The 10 Primers

1. Sherwin-Williams High Build Drywall Primer

Best for: dark paint and sheen under hard lighting. High-build, often sprayed on larger jobs. Thick enough that it wants proper equipment.

2. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus

Best for: smaller rooms and general sealing. Low odor and fast dry. Thinner than a true high-build surfacer, so Level 5 work may need two coats.

3. PPG Speedhide MaxBuild Primer/Surfacer

Best for: commercial or large residential spray jobs. Built as a primer/surfacer with strong hide. Follow PPG’s current spray and sanding specs.

4. KILZ Premium High-Hide Latex Primer

Best for: mixed new and old drywall on a remodel. Good hide and wide availability. Not as thick as a dedicated Level 5 surfacer.

5. Behr Drywall Plus Primer and Sealer

Best for: homeowner projects bought at the big-box store. Seals new drywall well. Confirm coverage on the can for your room size.

6. USG Sheetrock Tuff-Hide Primer-Surfacer

Best for: high-end rooms and critical light. A contractor high-build surfacer meant to be sprayed and sanded. Needs the right sprayer.

7. McCormick 1st Step High Build Primer

Best for: high-build work when you can get it locally. Sands well and is used as a Level 5 primer/surfacer. Availability varies by region.

8. Richard’s Rich-Tex Level-Five Primer/Surfacer

Best for: hiding joint flashing on smooth or formerly textured walls being brought to a higher finish. Check current recoat times on the label.

9. INSL-X Aqua Lock Plus

Best for: stain blocking and adhesion in problem rooms. Useful where moisture or old marks are an issue. Not a substitute for a high-build surfacer by itself.

10. Glidden PVA Drywall Interior Primer

Best for: sealing new drywall on a budget or as a first coat. PVA primers seal paper well but do not have the build of a Level 5 surfacer.

How to Choose

  • Critical light or dark paint: high-build primer/surfacer (Sherwin-Williams High Build, USG Tuff-Hide, PPG MaxBuild, Richard’s Rich-Tex).
  • Large commercial walls: sprayable surfacer, not a thin roll-on PVA alone.
  • Small room or touch-up: Zinsser, Behr, KILZ, or Glidden PVA — knowing you may need more coats.
  • Stains or mixed surfaces: a stain-blocking primer, then the finish coats.

Application Notes

Dust the wall before primer. High-build products are usually sprayed; thinner primers can be rolled. Light sanding between coats helps. Tint the primer toward the finish color on dark walls. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for thinning, tip size, dry time, and ventilation. Product lines get reformulated — do not treat this list as a spec sheet.

Primer FAQs

Can primer turn a Level 4 wall into Level 5?

High-build primer/surfacers can help, but Level 5 still starts with a skim coat over the whole surface. Primer is the seal — not the skim.

Is PVA primer enough for dark paint?

Usually no. PVA seals new paper. Dark or glossy paint needs more hide and a more even surface.
