DensShield Installation
DensShield is Georgia-Pacific’s interior tile backer. Coated face to the tile. Score-and-snap hang. It is not exterior DensGlass, and it is not bathroom greenboard.
What We Hang
Ron Hogan Drywall hangs DensShield where the drawings or the tile spec call for a glass-mat tile backer — showers, tub surrounds, and other interior wet walls that will take tile.
We do not treat it as painted wallboard, exterior sheathing, or a mold-remediation product. Family-owned since 1970.
DensShield Is Not DensGlass

Where DensShield Belongs
Tiled shower walls
The usual DensShield job. Coated face out. Joints treated the way GP and the tile spec require — not regular paper tape and all-purpose mud.
Tub surround
Same rule as the shower: listed backer behind tile that sees spray. Greenboard stays off this wall. Bathroom zones →
Other wet tile walls
Kitchen backsplashes and laundry splash walls when the spec names DensShield instead of cement board.
Not these jobs
Painted bath walls (use moisture-resistant gypsum). Outside the frame (use DensGlass). A shower pan or steam room still follows the waterproofing spec — the board is not the whole assembly.

How a DensShield Hang Actually Goes
1. Dry framing
Leak dead. Studs dry. Plumbing and fan in. Board does not hide wet wood.
2. Face out
The coated face points at the tile. Fasteners and cuts follow the GP schedule, not a drywall habit.
3. Joints for tile
Mesh and the joint treatment the product allows. This is not paper tape and three coats of topping.
4. Hand to tile
The setter owns thinset, membrane extras, and tile. Steam rooms and floors often still need the waterproofing the tile spec names.
Mistakes That Fail a Shower
Wrong GP panel
DensGlass in a shower. DensShield on an exterior wall. Same company, different product.
Coated face to the studs
The barrier is on the face. Flip the sheet and you wasted the panel.
Greenboard “because it is a bath”
Humidity board is for painted walls. Spray belongs on a tile backer.
Board over a leak
A coated face does not fix a valve that still drips into the cavity.

What is DensShield?
A Georgia-Pacific glass-mat gypsum tile backer with a coated face. It is made to take tile on interior wet walls. It is not painted drywall and not exterior DensGlass.
Is DensShield the same as DensGlass?
No. DensShield goes behind interior tile. DensGlass is exterior sheathing. Do not swap them.
Can DensShield replace cement board in a shower?
When the tile spec and the local inspector accept it, yes. If the drawing names cement board, that is what we hang. We do not freelance the backer.
Do I still need a waterproofing membrane?
Follow the product instructions and the tile spec. DensShield has a coated face. Steam rooms, pans, and many floors still get extra waterproofing from the tile trade.
Which face goes out?
The coated face faces the tile. Fasten with corrosion-resistant screws on the manufacturer’s spacing.
Do you tile over DensShield?
Our core work is hanging the backer. Tile, thinset, and extra membrane are the setter unless the written estimate says otherwise.
Can I use DensShield as a painted bathroom wall?
That is the wrong use. Painted bath walls get moisture-resistant gypsum. DensShield is a tile substrate.
