Essential Drywall Installation Checklist
Hang drywall too early and you bury problems. Use this list before Ron Hogan Drywall — or any crew — puts board on the wall.
The Board Goes Up Last Among the Rough Trades
Drywall hides framing, pipes, and wire. Once it is up, every missed box or crooked stud becomes a cut-out. This checklist is the work that should already be done when we arrive.
Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We hang and finish homes and commercial interiors in the Bay Area and Northern California. If an item below is not done, tell us before the hang date.
Before Anyone Hangs Drywall
1. The Building Is Dried In
Roof, windows, and exterior skin should keep rain off the framing. Wet studs and wet board are a bad mix.
2. Framing Is Complete and Straight Enough
Studs, joists, headers, and backing for cabinets, rails, and TVs should be in. Bowed walls will show through a Level 4 or Level 5 finish. Flag bad framing before we cover it.
3. Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC Rough-In Is Done
Boxes set, pipes in, ducts in. Moving a box after hanging means cutting a finished wall.
4. Required Inspections Have Passed
Framing, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical inspections — whatever your permit requires — should be signed off before board goes up.
5. Insulation and Fire- or Sound-Rated Work Is Planned
If the wall needs insulation, Type X, or QuietRock, that has to be in the scope before hanging starts — not after the painter arrives.
6. Access and Staging Are Clear
A path for boards, a place to stage material, and rooms cleared enough to work. Occupied homes need furniture moved or covered.
7. Finish Level Is Decided

What to Send With Your Estimate Request
- City and property type (house, addition, office, TI)
- Approximate square footage or room count
- Wood or metal studs
- Photos of framing and any problem walls
- The finish you want after hanging

- Hang on wood or metal framing
- Tape, coat, and sand
- Texture or smooth finish
- Prime-ready walls for the painter

- Hanging before electrical inspection
- No backing for a future TV or rail

- A “smooth” finish specified on walls that are not straight
