What a Tray Ceiling Is
A tray ceiling, also called a recessed ceiling, has a raised center and a lower border around the room. That “tray” step adds depth, can make a room feel taller, and gives a clean place for recessed lights or LED cove lighting.
Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We build the framing, hang the drywall, and finish the steps so the lines stay straight. You talk with Ron Hogan Sr., not a call center.
Why Homeowners and Builders Add a Tray
More Presence in the Room
A tray gives a living room, dining room, or primary bedroom an architectural step without raising the roof.
Lighting That Looks Planned
The recess is a natural place for cans or LED strips. We frame and finish the tray so your electrician can set the lights cleanly.
Custom Shape and Finish
Simple one-step trays, deeper trays, or trays with a texture or Level 4 / Level 5 smooth finish to match the rest of the house.
How We Build a Tray Ceiling
- Look at the room. Ceiling height, joists, existing drywall, and where lights will go.
- Frame the tray. Wood or metal framing for a straight step and a solid nailing surface.
- Hang the drywall. Board on the field, the drop, and the vertical face of the tray.
- Tape and finish. Inside corners and steps get extra attention so shadows do not show waves.
- Texture or smooth. Match the room, or finish Level 4 / Level 5 if the tray will be painted a contrasting color.
Typical jobs take about 2–5 days depending on size, depth, and finish. We give you a timeline after we see the ceiling.
Where Tray Ceilings Work Best
- Living rooms and dining rooms
- Primary bedrooms
- Home offices
- Additions and ADUs
- Offices, conference rooms, and retail interiors
If the existing ceiling is already finished, we can still add a tray in many rooms. Send photos of the ceiling and the room size.
What Affects the Price
Tray ceiling cost depends on room size, how deep the step is, whether we are working over an existing ceiling, the finish level, and any molding or lighting prep. As a planning range, many California tray ceiling jobs fall around $5–$15 per square foot. Your number depends on the room. Call for a free, job-specific estimate with no hidden fees.
