Smooth Walls Fail in the Light, Not on the Brochure
A wall can look fine with the overhead light on and still show tape lines when sun hits it from the side. That is why finish level matters. Level 4 and Level 5 are not marketing names. They are different amounts of work.

Level 4 vs. Level 5
Level 4 Smooth Finish
Joints and fasteners are taped, coated, and sanded to a flat, even surface. This is the usual smooth finish for most painted interiors.
Best for: living rooms, bedrooms, and offices with normal lighting and flat or eggshell paint.
Level 5 Smooth Finish
Everything in Level 4, plus a thin skim coat over the full surface so paper and mud take primer the same way. Joints are less likely to flash under hard light.
Best for: dark paint, satin or gloss, recessed lights, big windows, galleries, and modern rooms viewed up close.
When You Should Spend for Level 5
- The room has cans, sconces, or windows that rake light across the wall
- The paint will be dark, deep, or higher sheen
- The design is modern and the walls will be bare of texture
- A previous “smooth” job already showed seams after paint

How We Finish Smooth Walls
- Check hanging quality. Waves in the board cannot be mudded away completely.
- Tape joints and angles. Apply the coats a Level 4 wall needs.
- Sand between coats where it matters.
- For Level 5, skim the full field so texture is uniform.
- Leave a primer-ready surface. Paint still belongs to the painter unless you hire that separately.

Level 4 & Level 5 FAQs
Is Level 5 always better?
It is smoother. It is not always necessary. Use it when light or paint will show joints. Level 4 is the right call for many standard rooms.
Can you make an old textured wall Level 5?
Often yes, by skim-coating the existing texture. The wall has to be sound. Send photos so we can tell you if skimming is enough or if more work is needed.
Do you hang the drywall too?

Will Level 5 hide bad hanging?
No. A skim coat will not flatten a bowed wall. Hanging has to be straight first.
