Drywall Types Comparison
The right board depends on the room: regular walls, fire-rated assemblies, wet areas, sound, or exterior sheathing. Use this chart, then send the job if you want it hung.
Thickness and Type Are Different Questions
1/2-inch vs. 5/8-inch is how thick the panel is. Type X, moisture-resistant, QuietRock, and DensGlass are what the core and face are built for. Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We hang the board the room and the drawings require — we do not upsell a specialty panel for a closet.
The Boards We Hang Most
Regular 1/2-inch
Standard interior walls. Everyday living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways on wood or metal studs.
5/8-inch
Common on ceilings (less sag) and in many fire-rated walls. Heavier. Not automatically Type X unless the stamp says so.
Type X
Fire-resistant gypsum used in listed assemblies — garages, corridors, commercial partitions. Follow the drawing, not a guess.
Moisture-resistant
Often called greenboard. Better than regular paper board in humid rooms. Not a shower-pan product and not DensGlass.
QuietRock
Sound-reducing interior panel. QuietRock installation →
DensGlass
Exterior fiberglass-mat sheathing. Not an interior finish wall. DensGlass →
Quick Picker
- Bedroom wall: regular 1/2-inch unless the plan says otherwise
- Ceiling: often 5/8-inch
- Garage / rated wall: Type X as specified
- Bath (not the wet tile shower): moisture-resistant
- Shared wall / office: QuietRock or the listed sound assembly
- Outside the frame, behind cladding: DensGlass
Finish Is Separate From Board Type
You can tape and texture, or take a wall to Level 4 or Level 5, on most interior panels. The board choice does not replace a finish spec. Finishing →

Board FAQs
Is 5/8-inch always fire-rated?
No. Look for Type X (or the listed product) when the assembly requires it.
Can greenboard go in a shower?
Not as the wet-area tile backer. Use the product the tile and waterproofing spec call for.
Do you stock every specialty panel?
We install what the job specifies. Lead time on QuietRock or DensGlass is part of the bid.
