Drywall Finishing Techniques That Actually Show
Finishing is taping, coating, sanding, and either a texture or a smooth skim. The technique has to match the room’s light and the walls already in the house.
Hanging Hides the Studs. Finishing Hides the Board.
If the joints flash after paint, the finish failed — not the color. Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We tape, texture, and skim walls and ceilings across the Bay Area and Northern California. Use this page to name the technique. Use the phone to hire it.
The Core Techniques
Taping
Paper or mesh over the joints so the seam does not crack and open. Corners and butts need extra care.
Mudding (Coats)
Thin coats of compound over tape and fasteners. Several coats beat one thick coat that shrinks and cracks.
Sanding
Knocks down ridges between coats. Over-sanding burns paper and makes a fuzzy spot that shows after primer.
Corner Bead
Outside corners get a bead so the edge stays straight when someone hits it with a chair.
Skim Coat / Level 5
A thin coat over the whole field so paper and mud take paint the same way. Needed under dark paint and hard light. Level 4 & 5 →
Texture
Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel / old world — applied or matched so a repair does not read as a patch.
Pick the Finish for the Room
- Knockdown — sprayed, then flattened
- Orange peel — finer sprayed texture
- Old world / skip trowel — hand-applied, plaster-like
- Level 4 or Level 5 smooth — no texture
Mistakes That Show After Paint
- One heavy coat instead of several thin ones
- Painting before the mud is dry
- Skipping primer on a skim coat
- A “smooth” spec on wavy hanging
- A repair textured heavier than the rest of the wall

Finishing FAQs
Is a skim coat the same as Level 5?
Level 5 includes a full-field skim plus primer so the surface is even. A light touch-up is not Level 5.
Can you finish walls someone else hung?
Yes, if the hanging is straight enough. Photos tell us that faster than a guess.
