The Practical Soundproofing Guide

Foam panels on a painted wall do not stop a neighbor. Quieter rooms come from mass, a sealed assembly, and the right board — including QuietRock when the job calls for it.

What We Can Change — and What We Cannot

Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We hang QuietRock, extra layers of drywall, and commercial assemblies on wood or metal studs in the Bay Area and Northern California.

We do not sell “silent rooms.” Thin doors, windows, and floor assemblies still leak sound. A wall upgrade helps the wall. Tell us what you hear and we will tell you if drywall is the fix.

How Sound Gets Through a Wall

  • The board is too light
  • The studs couple both faces of the wall
  • Air leaks at boxes, plates, and uncaulked joints
  • The empty cavity rings

Fix those with mass, the right assembly, and a sealed finish — not with a poster that says “soundproof.”

What Works on a Drywall Job

QuietRock

Constrained-layer board that adds performance without always building a second full wall. QuietRock page →

Extra layers

A second layer of drywall adds mass. It helps. It is not the same as a designed sound assembly.

Sealed joints

A gap around a box or plate leaks sound. Acoustic sealant at the perimeter matters as much as the board brand.

The right stud wall

Metal or wood, cavity insulation, and a listed assembly when the plans call for a sound rating. Metal framing →

What Does Not Work by Itself

  • Egg crate foam or decorative panels on one face
  • A tube of regular caulk on a finished wall and a hope
  • Glue-only extra board with no fasteners and no seal
  • Expecting one new bedroom wall to stop street noise through windows

Typical Places We Get Called

  • Shared walls in a duplex or townhouse
  • A home office next to a TV room
  • Apartments and commercial TI with a sound spec on the drawings
  • Media rooms where QuietRock or a heavier assembly is in the plan

Soundproofing FAQs

Will QuietRock make the room silent?

No product does that. It can make a wall much quieter than standard 1/2-inch board. Windows and doors still count.

Can you add QuietRock to a finished room?

Yes, as a new layer on an existing wall, with trim and openings to deal with. Open framing is cleaner when you can get it.

Do you guarantee an STC number?

We install the specified board and assembly. Lab STC ratings assume a tested wall, not every field condition. We will not invent a number for your house.
