Knockdown Texture Guide

Knockdown is a sprayed texture that is flattened while it is still soft. Understanding the look is useful. Matching an existing house is where most DIY jobs fail.

Ron Hogan Drywall has been family-owned since 1970. We apply and match knockdown on Bay Area and Northern California jobs. This page explains the finish. It is not a substitute for a crew when the wall has to blend with the rest of the house.

What Knockdown Is

Compound is sprayed onto a taped wall. After it skins over, a wide knife flattens the peaks. The result is a mottled, slightly flattened pattern — heavier than orange peel, more uniform than skip trowel.

When DIY Is Reasonable

  • A closet or garage nobody will study in raking light
  • A new wall that does not have to match 20-year-old knockdown
  • You already know how to tape so the base is flat

When to Hire It

  • A repair that has to disappear into the existing texture
  • A living room or ceiling you will see every day
  • Popcorn coming off and a new knockdown going on
  • You have never run a hopper and compressor

A mismatch is hard to sand off. It is easier to hire the first time. Professional knockdown →

What Makes a Match Hard

Every house has a different splat size and flatten timing. Too wet and the pattern smears. Too dry and you drag crumbs. Too heavy and the patch reads as a cloud on the wall. That is a judgment call, not a printed recipe.

If You Still DIY a Small Area

  • Finish the taping first — texture will not hide ridges
  • Protect floors and fixtures; overspray travels
  • Test on scrap board, not the feature wall
  • Wear eye and dust protection
  • Stop if the pattern does not match. Adding more usually makes it worse

We do not publish mix ratios or compressor settings here. Those change with product, weather, and the wall you already have.

Knockdown FAQs

Can you fix a bad DIY knockdown?

Often yes — by scraping or skimming and re-texturing. That costs more than hiring the first time. Send a photo.

Is knockdown outdated?

No. It is still one of the most common Bay Area finishes. Smooth Level 4 / 5 is the other direction.

Need Knockdown Applied or Matched?

Text a photo of the wall. The family-owned Bay Area crew since 1970 will tell you if DIY is worth the risk.
